Gen-Z Artists in India

From being couch potatoes to instant workaholics, the Gen-Z era has taken the pandemic as a way to enrich their skills. Some are investing in digital gold and some are using crypto to earn quick cash. But, there are another circle of people who are utilizing their time and energy into creating art portfolios for a designated art school that they might be looking up to. Or, even a viable career.

On social media platforms including Instagram and Twitter, a lot of Gen-Z’s have showcased their talent. With a click to publish, an appropriate BGM, and SEO keywords, these tools get them the fame they deserve. The surprise element is that a lot of them do not have an art degree or prior experience. All it takes them is months of practice and patience, for them to get recognized.

For instance, an Instagram art handle, sassy_strokess, managed by Chennai-based, Sanjanaa Madhan has grabbed quite the attention, keeping in mind the artist’s potential. But it is not just the work of an artist that matters, but the views that play along. On asking the 21-year-old about the ‘BTS’ involved, she said, “With the appropriate music, edits and hashtags, our content reaches a wider audience.”

The artist had discovered her passion for art from a very early age. After being enrolled in art classes till her board examinations, she went on a 3-year break and came out as a self-taught artist, paving her mark with her phenomenal work. Her handle has a 1.6K following and focuses upon different canvas paintings and customized portraits. She is an art enthusiast/ educator who also conducts workshops and performs commission work.

Due to the pandemic, as people have lost jobs, young Gen-Z’s have taken it upon themselves to challenge their inner-self. Not only are they risk-takers, but are also comfortable in exploring their options and investing in their talent, making it a small-scale business to hinder to. Moreover, with the tech geeks that they already are, it takes one the courage to skyrocket their business and call it even.

Based on similar instances, the Chennai-based art director, Balagovindkumar, has hit the internet with his heartfelt story as he contracted the virus. During those days in misery, he channeled his emotions into a series of different paintings. Going by the name of ‘The Quarantined Days,’ he is a self-taught artist, who also works as an Assistant Art Director under a leading Production Designer.

On being inspired by the Mexican artist, Frida Kahlo’s work, he said, “She was able to exhibit her pain through her art. When I had tested positive and was made to isolate, I thought about Kahlo. Like her experience, I wanted to document my struggle, which gave name to my documentation, ‘Art will heal everything.’”

While this generation is moving forward and coming out of their shells to explore opportunities, may the odds of technology be in their favour!
